"Daddy, Daddy, look at me!"
I first heard the title of this blog entry when I was watching a commercial on television. In this commercial was a little girl who was dancing while her Dad was videotaping her. While she was dancing she kept saying, "Daddy, Daddy, look at me!" This commercial was just a commercial until I noticed my daughter, 3 years old, and son, 2 years old, beginning to say the same thing, "Daddy, Daddy, look at me!" It was in that moment where just those 5 little words spoke to me so deeply and profoundly. You see, our children desperately want and absolutely need our attention as they grow up. Now I know as Dads we are so busy trying to make it happen for our families by going out into the world each and everyday pounding the pavement. I am no different from the rest of us but one thing that I have found to be certain; YOU CAN'T BUY BACK TIME! You really can't. Once it's gone, it's gone. So you must make a concerted effort to make sure that during each stage of your child's life that you are there for them. Now by there I don't just mean physically but also emotionally. It is vital that your children know that when you are with them, you're with them whole-heartedly. That nothing else matters in this world but them. This means the world to them. The things that I remember growing up about my Dad aren't so much what I got in terms of gifts and things of that nature. Instead, what I remember most are when I looked up in the stands at my ball games and saw him cheering me on, that he was there for all my special moments like graduations, birthdays, holidays, and family-gatherings. I was truly blessed to come home each and everyday and see him, knowing that I could always look to him for whatever I needed. Because of this, I realized that what matters most in this world is 'YOUR TIME!' It is invaluable. Someone once said, "A truly rich man is one whose children run into his arms when his hands are empty." Let this be true of your relationship with your kids and make sure that you are there and PRESENT when they say, "Daddy, Daddy, look at me!"
